Fertilization & Weed Control Program

The best defense against weeds is a thick & healthy lawn. When you have a dense lawn, it makes it harder for weed seeds to germinate because they need light to grow. Building & maintaining a thick & healthy lawn starts by choosing the proper grass species for your growing region. Then, making sure that you are cutting your lawn at the proper heights, keeping weeds at bay and properly fertilizing your lawn each year.

Soil Testing
Versailles Lawn Care's Fertilization & Weed Control Program is customized to the unique challenges of each lawn. Soils and soil fertility levels vary across Kentucky. Soils under lawns have often been modified by the removal of topsoil or the addition of fill during construction, so even knowing the natural fertility of the area may be of little value. The only way to specifically know the fertility needs of your lawn is to perform a soil test. A soil test provides us with information about certain nutrient levels and the pH of the soil. This information is critical to determine which fertilizer we use on your lawn, how much to apply, and whether lime needs to be applied.
Treatment Schedule:

Early Spring Soil Testing:

  • We test all lawns that are new to Versailles Lawn Care and our returning customers a minimum of every three years.

Early Spring Treatments:

  • Pre-emergence and early post-emergence control of crabgrass, along with pre-emergence control of more than 45 other grassy and broadleaf weed species.

Late Spring Treatments:

  • Focus on maintaining color & root durability while controlling broadleaf weed species.

Summer Treatments:

  • Focus on maintaining color & root durability. Spot treatments for any lingering broadleaf weeds.

Autumn Treatments:

  • Balanced fertilizer applications to help turf rebound from summer stress.

Late Autumn Treatments:

  • This is the optimal time for heavy fertilization. Late autumn treatments are very important for development of a hardy root system.

Additional Treatments

Lime:

  • Soil pH should ideally be in a range of 6.0 to 6.5. If the pH gets much higher or lower than this range, various macro and micronutrients can become tied up in the soil and will be unavailable to plants. By soil testing all of our lawns, we determine if any Lime applications are needed and will provide recommendations as needed.

Grub Preventative:

  • Insecticide is applied as a preventative before a grub problem develops.

Grub Curative:

  • Insecticide treatment is applied after the grubs have hatched in late summer.
